How Tiendo Began
Martha Luganu is the Founder of Tiendo Autism Centre and Day Care a nonprofit initiative committed to creating inclusive learning opportunities and a nurturing environment for children with autism and other unique learning needs in Bungoma, Kenya. Her commitment to this work was born from her love for her grandson, Tiendo, and the challenges she experienced when searching for an appropriate autism placement for him. Faced with a lack of suitable placements in Bungoma, repeated rejections and endless waiting lists, Martha chose action over waiting and created a specialized learning space where her grandson could learn, grow and feel supported.
What began as a safe haven for one child has grown into a nurturing community supporting children and families with a focus on specialized learning, child development, care and inclusion. Through Tiendo Autism Centre and Day Care, Martha is helping create an environment where children are understood, valued for their individual abilities and given opportunities to develop their skills, confidence and potential.
Martha believes that every child deserves to be accepted, supported and given an opportunity to build a meaningful future. Her long-term vision is to contribute to a more inclusive community where families affected by autism have access to appropriate support and where children are not defined by their challenges, but empowered by their strengths. At the heart of her work is the belief that every child has a future worth building.
